PROMOTING THE WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY AGENDA: COMBATING MISINFORMATION AND STEREOTYPES

The main goal of the project is to increase awareness and understanding of the need and importance of gender mainstreaming in the security and defense sector, promoting a more inclusive and equitable environment for girls and women, including refugee girls and women.

The project aims to:

  • Identify and address barriers and stereotypes that hinder the integration of women in security and peace processes;
  • raise awareness of the challenges of refugees, particularly women and children, and the impact of war on social cohesion;
  • Highlight the achievements of women in the security sector in order to inspire and motivate more women to get involved in this field.

Main issues the project aims to address based on the current crisis/conflict:

  • Misinformation on the role of women in security and peace processes and on refugee issues;
  • Insufficient information on key issues related to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda;
  • Gender-based stereotypes;
  • The war in Ukraine and its impact on human security and social cohesion in the Republic of Moldova, including implications for refugees.

Activities:

General Activity 1: Analytical note developed to combat false narratives and misinformation that undermine the role of women in peace and security processes.

General Activity 2: Outreach and awareness-raising activities and initiatives to counter stereotyping on the WPS Agenda.

Specific activities:

  • Two exhibitions in the format of 2 round tables for representatives of local public administration, civil society organizations, private sector, boys and girls from 3 localities of the Republic of Moldova including the project products.
  • Development, publication and distribution of a booklet which will include the stories of 10 women in the police structures and the story of a refugee woman.
  • A series of social media posts on the project activities and materials developed.
  • An event at which all project products, including materials developed by journalists, will be presented for awards, with the participation of international organizations, public institutions and young professionals, both women and men.

Overall Activity 3: Strengthen the capacity of journalists to effectively present issues related to the WPS Agenda, gender-sensitive narratives and address the humanitarian and security challenges faced by refugees, especially women and children.

Specific activities:

  • Organizing the Security Academy for Journalists: Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
  • Elaboration of journalistic materials on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

Project period:

October 2024 – March 2025

The project is implemented by the Platform for Security and Defense Initiatives, with the support of UN Women Moldova, and funded by the Women’s Fund for Peace and Humanitarian Assistance.
